Paul Merson has claimed that Manchester City defender John Stones is a “success story” waiting to happen and is confident a move to Chelsea would be a brilliant step for his career.
Frank Lampard’s side are interested in the 26-year-old from their Premier League top-four rivals.
Stones has had some brilliant moments during his spell at the Etihad Stadium and has been a two-time Premier League title winner with them, vindicating his move from Everton back in 2016.
But the ball-playing centre-back has fallen down the pecking order under manager Pep Guardiola in the last couple of seasons and his form appears to have dipped for Man City.
Merson is convinced that he is a success in the making and can rediscover his best form with a move to the capital, so has urged Chelsea to go all out for him.
“Chelsea should go and get John Stones because there is a success story there waiting to happen,”
“I’ve said all along Stones would do well there. And they should go and get him now. He has no future at City.
Stones is reportedly on the Chelsea radar as it stands, but it would be a gamble to sign someone that looks like he’s struggling for confidence right now and has been booted from his side’s best XI.
Blues manager Lampard ideally needs a commanding centre-back to join ahead of the new season to fix what is a leaky defence and a real leader at the back with experience could make a major impact.
