Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would have no problem quitting the club if he felt the board were not happy with him, according to former Chelsea and Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino.
Guardiola saw his City side crash out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage on Saturday. Ligue 1 side Lyon beat City 3-1 in Lisbon to once again delay the club’s desire to win Europe’s elite club competition.
And Cascarino reckons the Spaniard may decide to walk if City chiefs are not happy with his performance in Europe.
“If that question was put to him about their record in the Champions League and he got the feeling that they weren’t happy, I think Pep would walk,” Cascarino said
“I think he’s well capable of doing that.”
Guardiola changed formation against Lyon, choosing to play with a back three to match up with the French side.
But his plan backfired and two goals from substitute Moussa Dembele sealed a memorable win to set up a semi-final against favourites Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Cascarino says the biggest reason behind City’s defeat was Guardiola’s decision to change tactics from what he has used on most occasions since he arrived in England four years ago.
“Pep only plays his way, normally,” Cascarino added
“I say that because the Champions League performances have been tactically very different.
“I’m watching a team last night cross the ball numerous times during the game. When they cross the ball on the floor they’re very dangerous.
“[Raheem] Sterling’s had loads of tap-ins – I know he missed the one last night – but he’s had loads of tap-ins at the far post. When they do that, they’re brilliant.
“When they’re crossing the ball and no one can head the ball, why?
“I came away thinking there were so many things that were wrong last night.
“It wasn’t like Barcelona against Bayern Munich but it was tactically poor from a coach renowned to be one of the best but he’s only going to play his way.
“His biggest crime is he didn’t play the way Pep has done in the Premier League.”
