Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand has lavished praise on Chelsea’s signing, Moroccan attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech.
The 27-year-old, after several brilliant seasons with Eredivisie giants Ajax, finally pulled the trigger on a move to one of Europe’s major leagues, signing a five-year deal with Chelsea earlier this year.
After seeing out the 2019-20 season (which was scrapped in the Netherlands due to the coronavirus pandemic), Ziyech has joined up with Chelsea and is set to add his star quality to Frank Lampard’s team when the 2020-21 season starts next month.
Ferdinand was full of praise for Ziyech’s ability and has compared him favourably to another North African star who has excelled in the English top flight, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez.
“We watched Ziyech last season for Ajax, he was magnificent,” Ferdinand told BT Sport, as quoted by Goal.
“He reminds me a little bit of [Riyad] Mahrez but he crosses the ball a little bit more.
“He’s someone who’s really always trying to find a way to unlock defences with his delivery. [He has] a lot of guile.”
Ziyech joins Timo Werner as a major addition to the Chelsea squad for 2020-21, with Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz also tipped to join the Blues.
