Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has made a U-turn on defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ future at the club, according to a report. The 22-year-old star had been expected to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer transfer market after falling out of favor under Mikel Arteta.
Ainsley has made 91 senior appearances for Gunners and has featured in a number of roles under Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, and Mikel Arteta.
The report suggests that the Spaniard, who succeeded his compatriot last year, sees the England U21s international as a central midfielder in the future.
The north London club returns to Premier League action on June 17 with a huge trip to Manchester City. Meanwhile, Everton is allegedly at the head of the race to sign Juventus star Adrien Rabiot.
The Frenchman has made 24 appearances for his side since arriving on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. The 25-year-old has only started 11 Serie A matches during the 2019-20 season, though, and the Old Lady are reportedly keen to move him on during this summer’s transfer window.
Gunners have been strongly linked with the footballer, who turned down the chance to sign a new deal with PSG to join the Italian champions on a free transfer last year.
