Manchester United have been thrown into mourning as their former defender and club legend, Tony Dunne dies at the age of 78. Dunne who played as a left fullback during his illustrious career was part of the squad that defeated Benfica 4-1 at Wembley in 1968 as United claim their first-ever European Cup.
The Irishman joined Red Devils at the age of 18 in 1960, played 535 first-team matches for the club, putting him eighth on their all-time appearance list.
Manchester United released an official statement on their Twitter page to mourn the death of their club legend.
“One of our greatest-ever full-backs. An integral part of the 1968 European Cup-winning side,” the club stated on their Twitter page. A player who made 535 appearances in the red shirt of Manchester United. Our heartfelt condolences go to the loved ones of Tony Dunne. May he rest in peace.”
