President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the rape and murder of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, who was raped and then brutally killed while she was reading in a church on the 27th of May.
President Buhari has joined the list of Nigerian leaders to react to the rape and killing of Vera Uwa. Her ordeal has reignited a call for a review into Nigeria’s justice system and a stiffer penalty for rapists.
“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uwaila Omozuwa,” President Buhari shared on Twitter.
“I expect the Nigeria Police Force to speedily and diligently investigate this case and ensure that all the culprits responsible for this barbaric act are brought to justice.”
Several Nigerians have called on the government to prioritize the safety of girls in Nigeria, as many women are often victims and targets of rape in Nigeria, and the burden of proof often lies on the victim.
The hashtag #JusticeForUwa was trending on Sunday and Monday, across social media, after the news of the murder of the 22-year-old who went into a church to read broke. The incident happened in Benin city of Edo State.
