The Attorney General of the Federation of Nigeria (AGF), Abubakar, after all intervention efforts by the countries elder statesmen and top political figures, has insisted that the South-West security outfit, Operation Amotekun, remains illegal.
He made this known in a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Dr. Umar Gwandu.
He insisted that the constitution of Nigeria does not permit the creation or setup of a regional security apparatus.
The statement by Abubakar Malami, on Operation Amotekun, reads: “This is a fact which is undisputable and undeniable.
“Mr Falana was prevaricating and circumlocuting using evasive techniques when asked by the media to justify the presence of lacuna within the law which could establish or protect the concept of regionalism in any operation in the country.
“This arrangement called Amotekun is not backed by any law neither at the State nor at the Federal Government level. Amotekun, therefor, remains unconstitutional and illegal as already indicated,” said Abubakar Malami.
Recall that, on Thursday, January 9, Governors of the South Western states in Nigeria launched Operation Amotekun for the purpose of “safeguarding the region and to fight cases of kidnapping and insurgency threats.”
Since then, the operation has been on rocking roads with the Federal Government has the FG has refused to recognize the outfit as a legal entity.
Several legal icons and respected elders such as Femi Falana, Wole Soyinka and, most recently, Senator Bola Tinubu, have given some form of thumbs up to the operation.
