The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given the reason for not issuing the new governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, his certificate of return.
Recall that a seven-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on Tuesday sacked the former governor of Imo State Emeke Ihedioha after reversing the cancelation of 388 polling units that were canceled by INEC. This move brought in Hope Uzodinma as the legitimate governor of the state.
Thus, the apex court ordered INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return it issued to Ihedioha and Issue a new Hope Uzodinma a new one.
However, hours after the ruling of the Supreme Court, the electoral commission is yet to carry out the order.
In a conversation with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission was yet to receive the order from the Supreme Court but will issue the Certificate of Return to Uzodinma once it gets the order.
“Dear colleagues, please be informed that the commission is yet to be served with the enrolled order of the Supreme Court judgement. Therefore, we cannot issue the Certificate of Return to the APC candidate yet. However, once the commission receives the enrolled order, the CoR will be issued.”
