“Congratulations my friend,” Christine Lagarde congratulates Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, OYOGist.com reports.

The President of the European Central Bank has congratulated Nigeria’s former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her successful appointment as the next Director General of the World Trade Organization.

Lagerde shared the congratulatory post on her LinkedIn page on Thursday.

“Congratulations to my friend Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on becoming the first female Director-General of the World Trade Organization. I’ve known Ngozi for many years. Her strong will and determination will drive her to tirelessly promote free trade to the benefit of people worldwide.” Christine Lagarde wrote.

Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was announced the finalist to be appointed as the next WTO DG after South Korean co-runner Yoo Myung-hee dropped out of the race in November 2020 after failing to secure the support of Japan Central Bank and the ECB.

Dr Okojo-Iweala will assume the position of the WTO director general come May 1st.

Ngozi will be the first black female to head the trade organization.
