First civilian Governor of Lagos State Lateef Jakande has passed away

According to report reaching oyogist.com, First civilian Governor of Lagos state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande has passed away at the age of 91.

Popularly known as Baba Kekere, Jakande was a former journalist who became governor of Lagos State in 1979. He brought tremendous development to the state in line with the five cardinal programmes of the Unity Party of Nigeria founded by former Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His tenure ended December 31, 1983.

Jakande was later named Minister of Works by the military regime of Gen. Sani Abacha.

His tenure as Governor of Lagos state is most celebrated for his effort in education and the massive infrastructural development recorded during his four-year stint . Notable are the numerous low income housing estates built across the state in his name – Jakande Estate.
