The pandemic and ASUU strike really took a toll on university students this year as they have been stuck at home for more than 7 months, since the strike was already in progress before lockdown began, oyogist.com reports.

A memo signed by the registrar of Abia state university has been circulating online containing the information surrounding the resumption of students in the school. According to the memo, students would not be allowed to gain entry into the school without evidence of payment of the sum of 15,000 to the school’s account, a fee called pandemic prevention fee.

Also they will be ineligible to participate in their examinations which would start in the same month of their resumption if they fail to pay the pandemic prevention fee. From comments circulating online, it is still unclear what exactly the pandemic prevention fee would be used for as it was not explained in the memo passed.

Some of the students have already started protesting the levy placed upon them, calling it extortion and imploring the other students to say no to the fee.

According to sources, the prevention fee was initially slated at 25,000 naira before it was reduced to 15,000 naira, but the students want a total dismissal of the fee.
