Geneva, a city in Switzerland has introduced its new minimum wage of 23 Swiss francs ($25) an hour, roughly ($4,100) a month for its 41-hour working week.
The citizens residing in Geneva on Sunday voted in favor of introducing the minimum wage, which is reported to be the highest in the world.
Payment of the minimum wage would begin this month, sources say. The call for the new minimum wage was to alleviate the poverty problem brought by the coronavirus pandemic, with reports of thousands queuing for food.
Geneva, one of the most expensive cities in the world is ranked ninth on HR consulting firm Mercer’s 2020 global cost of living survey.
Geneva’s new minimum wage is more than triple of that in the U.S. (at $7.25) per hour and more than double the U.K.’s highest basic hourly rate of £8.72 ($11.20).
