The Red Devils have made just one high-profile signing in the form of Donny van de Beek, who officially joined the club earlier this week in a £40m deal.

But while United haven’t added more than one player to their squad, they have been linked with a number of European football’s biggest stars.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho was reportedly close to a switch to Old Trafford earlier in the window, but United baulked at the German club’s £108m valuation of the 20-year-old.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United hierarchy will know that acquiring the England international could prove pivotal to their aspirations of challenging for the Premier League title.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that the Red Devils would be able to compete with his former club and Manchester City at the top of the tree if they do cough up the cash to sign Sancho.

Carragher wrote in his column: “I have always thought that one or two little things can turn it – and, for me, signing Bruno Fernandes in January has completely changed United.

“That is only one signing. He came in and suddenly United were a totally different team. That’s how close it is.Sancho in action

“It could be that Jadon Sancho comes in and then United are challenging for the title. They are not as far away as people think. One or two more signing could make the difference.”

Carragher believes Solskjaer’s side need a player to occupy the right-hand side of the attack, given that Mason Greenwood is likely to end up in a more central position down the line.

“United need someone on that right-hand side,” the Sky Sports pundit added. “At only 18 years of age Mason Greenwood has come in and done brilliantly, but he will eventually play down the middle, such is his strength as a finisher.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and even Juan Mata in that right-sided role, now it’s Greenwood.”Rashford & Sancho

Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as a front three with Greenwood available as back-up? That certainly looks like a title-winning attack on paper.
