“I hope my players want to go to the next level”- Arteta

The 2019/20 campaign was something of a mess from an Arsenal perspective.

The Gunners had a nightmare start to the season under Unai Emery.

This eventually saw the Spaniard sacked and replaced on a permanent basis by his fellow countryman, Mikel Arteta.

And despite having zero managerial experience to his name, the former Manchester City coach really did turn things around at Arsenal.

Granted, the north Londoners would finish 8th in the Premier League, their lowest position for many years.

But it was still quite clear that Arteta had a positive impact on the side overall.

Arteta was also able to guide Arsenal to their latest FA Cup triumph earlier this month.

As well as being Arteta’s first piece of silverware as a coach, it also secured Arsenal a Europa League spot for the forthcoming campaign.

But despite already securing a trophy after less than a year as a manager, Arteta is seemingly eager to keep improving with the Gunners.

Arteta was asked recently where he expects his team to be in a year’s time.

And though he stated he couldn’t really say, Arteta went on to claim he is hoping the Arsenal players want to go to the next level, rather than relaxing a bit after securing a trophy and a European place:

“It’s an impossible question.

“I don’t even know where we are going to be on day one of pre-season. I have to look at the players, how they come from holidays, how they come after winning, I want to see that reaction.

“You know, are they going to be a little more relaxed because we’ve done something or are they going to come with ‘Okay, this is nothing that we’ve done. We have to go to the next level, we have to apply ourselves better, we have to improve in a lot of areas and we have to dominate many other aspects of the game that at the moment we cannot control’.

“If that is the mindset, then I am very positive that we will be sitting here in a year’s time really happy, but I hope we take that road straight away.”
