‘I started boxing because i wanted to avenge my mother’s death’ – WBA Champion Monalisa Sibanda

African boxing queen Monalisa Sibands has disclosed that the death of her mother motivated her to take up the Sport. Sibanda who is 33 years of age is from Zimbabwe and she’s is the current Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) champion after winning the title in 2019.

She also became first for Zimbabwean woman to win world title on professional boxing. Monalisa began her journey into he sports began in 1999, the same year her mother died of domestic violence.

She said the willingness to avenge the death of mother and protect herself from men motivated her to take up which was dominated by men.

“Boxing is life, all my life is in boxing. In 1999 the year I started boxing, the same year my mother died. They way she died touched me, I wanted a revenge and don’t want any man to hit me and that’s what pushed me to boxing. And it pushes me to be a strong woman”.

Monalisa Sibande is married to Madzibaba Tinofirei Simon who is an Apostolic church official nine years. The couple are blessed with three lovely children and Monalisa said she does not intimidate her husband with her profession and added that she forget about boxing once she step into the house.

“I started boxing with men, gim with men and it’s not easy to be a strong woman. Im fighter, a mother and when I get into the house, I leave boxing behind and that’s the secret of my achievements.” She said.
