Sadiq Abacha, one of the sons of former military ruler Sani Abacha, says authorities always “harass” and “interrogate” him whenever he’s traveling in or out of the country.

The Sani Abacha family was given “clearance paper” and told that their names have been removed from the “black book” but nothing seems to have changed up till now, Sadiq said on Wednesday.

“Nothing has changed. Even recently, before this lockdown, I was interrogated when I returned from Dubai,” he told BBC Hausa.

Sani Abacha served as the military head of state of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998. Twenty-two years after Abacha’s death, Sadiq says he’s “not happy” when revelations about stolen monies under his father’s regime crop up, adding that “we hear the report just as others used to hear”.

On their relationship with the families of other surviving Nigerian military leaders, he said that apart from the family of Ibrahim Babangida, and to some extent that of President Muhammadu Buhari, others had, allegedly, failed to sustain the relationship.

We’ve been to the security agency and they have issued us with a clearance paper. That our names have been removed from the black book.

“But nothing has changed. I’m always harassed whenever I’m going out or coming into the country. I don’t know where to go and be listened to.”
