OYOGist.com has learned that more than hundred Israeli websites were reportedly attacked by Iran-based hackers on Thursday morning, disabling the sites and replacing them with a message threatening the destruction of Israel.
The Israeli web company uPress said in a statement that the deliberate attack had targeted several websites hosted by uPress and that a security gap was found in a WordPress extension. uPress said they are working with Israel’s National Cyber Directorate to conduct an investigation into the hackers behind the attack.
Among the hacked websites are some belonging to local municipalities, popular restaurant chains, several NGOs, and a left-wing Member of parliament. Although there was no official indication as to who the Masterminds behind the attacks was, there are also images which feature the Iranian flags and symbols.
The attack focused on only uPress, which has a vulnerability that the hackers used for their attack. The targeted websites – under the uPress server – displayed the phrases “Be ready for a big surprise” in Hebrew and English and “The countdown of Israel destruction has begun since a long time ago.”
