Following their failure to meet set requirements, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has de-registered 74 parties in Nigeria and left 18 parties active.

According to INEC, the parties that were deregistered failed to satisfy the “Fourth Alteration to the Constitution”, thereby giving the commission the constitutionally granted-powers to de-register them.

According to the commission, originally 75 parties failed to meet those requirements, but one of the political parties, the APP, filed a suit in court that prevented INEC from deregistering it.

“75 political parties did not satisfy the requirements of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution. However, one of the political parties, the APP filed a suit in court and obtained an order restraining the Commission from deregistering it,”

INEC said in a statement.

The commission then released a list of all the parties that were effectively deregistered and henceforth cannot participate in elections in the country. See the list of all the political parties that were de-registered by INEC below.

Following the de-registration of the above listed 74 political parties, the commission (INEC) has now released a new list of all the political parties that are active in Nigeria.

There are now, effectively, only 18 political parties that are recognized by INEC in Nigeria, and those parties are listed below:
