Police IG orders investigation of officers in viral video

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has ordered an investigation into the officers in a viral video showing policemen snatching a young man‘s phone and threatening to shoot him if he resisted them.

If you’re new to Nigeria, police brutality and harrasment is a regular way of life for many youths. These heinous crime is often blamed on the non-existent claim that their victims are alleged Internet fraudsters, or a commonly known local parlance “Yahoo boys”.

In a viral video depicting a similar experience, the officers can be seen stopping the young man, and this time, instead of asking him for his phone politely (an act every IG of police since Solomon Arase has vowed is illegal and erring officers would be punished for) the policemen went ahead and snatched the young man’s phones from him.

They even threatened to shoot him if he resisted, and of course, promised that nothing would happen if they did.

The moment was captured by a citizen who shared it on Twitter. It has since gone viral, and after approximately 16 hours of sharing the video, the police has informed the public that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has ordered an investigation into the officers involved.

The police also announced that the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) has personally gotten in touch with the victim involved.
