The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi just recently made his position on the proposed Hate Speech bill known, and he is not in support of it. The Hate Speech bill was proposed by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

The first-class monarch was at the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Tribune and a book presentation to mark the event when he admonished the legal community to kick against the bill.

There, he remarked if giving a contrary opinion to that of the government does indeed warrant being killed for it.

“If I have not killed anyone; and I give an opinion that is contrary to the government’s, will it be a sufficient reason for me to be charged for death penalty? Where are the lawyers in Nigeria? Constitutional lawyers in Nigeria, where are they? Can’t they speak up?” the Alaafin of Oyo remarked.
